The Howgill Fells are in the far northwest corner of the Yorkshire Dales and abut the Lake District. Unlike most of the Dales which are limestone, these Fells are mainly sandstone and mudstone and over 100 million years older. Their soft and rounded forms contrast with the more rugged nearby Lake District Fells.
